1 - Materials 

- HOW TO MAKE A NATIVE INDIAN HEADDRESS / WARBONNET ? -    

Please read all the information before beginning

Materials:

Following are materials to make a plain Warbonnet with 30 feathers. (Materials for optional items, such as ermine tube and a pompon, are not included.) The craftsman can substitute for many of the listed materials, based on the previous discussion of warbonnet components. (Note: If you wish to make a Trailer Bonnet – either a Single or Double Trailer – you will need an additional minimum of 15 feathers per Trailer. See Construction information for Trailer Bonnets in Chapter 10.)

 

30 Imitation Eagle Feathers

1 oz. 5”-6” base plumes

½” oz. 2”3” tip plumes

1 Wing Spike – For major plume (May substitute a 1/8” x 12” wood dowel)

1 piece 2 ½” x 24” red wool or wool felt

2 pieces stiff thin leather or rawhide: 4 ½” x 4 ½” (or 1 piece 4 ½” x 8”) – for leather loops

½” oz. 12” – 14” horsehair (optional)

1 bonnet crown: May be made from leather pieces sewn together, a commercial wool-felt hat crown, or an old wool-felt har.

1 1  ¼” x 10” Beaded / Quilled Brow band

2 Medallions: 1 ½” or 2” diameter, either Beaded or Quilled (may substitute Quilled Wheels)

1 36” Soft leather/buckskin lace – for Primary Lace

2 Bobbins heavy cotton thread (e.g., Button & Carpet thread)

1 Spool of colored thread (Recommended: white or yellow) – for “Firecracker” thread wraps

6’ – 8’ Simulated Sinew – For Secondary Lace. Can substitute heavy string as “kite string” If simulated Sinew is used, acquire the full thickness type.

1 White Rabbit Fur – Grade A (few or no holes)

1 Bottle of craft glue

1 Roll of Masking Tape (Optional)

4 1/8” x 36” Wood Dowels

 

 

Tools:

Scissors (Very sharp)

Awl

Xacto(R) or pen Knife

Sewing needle

Darning needle (very large sewing needle)

Pliers

Medium grit (120) sandpaper

Rulers: 12” straight ruler, yard stick, AND one cloth measuring tape

Pencil

Tailor’s chalk

Small artist’s brush (optional)
